My research is in the areas of ethical theory and moral psychology. I'm also interested in ethics more broadly construed, epistemology, and social philosophy.
Spanning these areas, the general focus of my research is the naturalistic study of moral judgment. My recent work examines the nature and origins of the cognitive processes involved in moral judgment, and related questions concerning how scientific findings bear on debates in normative ethics and moral epistemology. Another general topic of interest is how work in empirical moral psychology should inform how we think about our moral responsibility practices and related issues in social philosophy.
Publications:
"Rational Learners and Moral Rules," S. Nichols, S. Kumar, T. Lopez, A. Ayars, & H. Chan
"Ethical Conservatism and the Psychology of Moral Luck," S. Nichols, M. Timmons, & T. Lopez
"Side Constraints and the Structure of Commonsense Ethics," T. Lopez, J. Zamzow, M. Gill, & S. Nichols
